Day tour No. 101

The sunken antique city of Wiang Kum Kam and the life around the river (boat trip, carriage ride through Wiang Kum Kam, flower market, Chinese temple, tea house, colonial houses).

We’ll pick you up at your hotel between 8 and 6.30 a.m. and transfer you to the tour’s starting point.
By boat, we will go to the sunken city of “Wiang Kum Kam”, where a horse carriage will take us on a sightseeing trip through the copious grounds. Our guide will provide you with the relevant historical and background information.
“Wiang Kum Kam” was founded in 1287 by King Mengrai, who, after conquering Lamphun, intended to establish the new city of Chiang Mai and moved his court to the banks of the Ping river not far from the place of the nowadays’ Chiang Mai. This location offered a great strategic position and defense line. The new city developed on an area of 850 x 1600 m, with a palace, temples, residences and a market. From here he oversaw the construction of the new capital Chiang Mai.
About the beginning of the 16th century, Wiang Kum Kam was afflicted by a devastating flood, which left the whole area covered under a meters high layer of mud, making it virtually inhabitable. Subsequently, the old settlement fell into oblivion.
Only in the 1980s, archaeologists started to search for the sunken city and restored their discoveries in order to make it accessible for the public.
After a guided tour of the old settlement, which lasts about 2 hours, we’ll return to the starting point.

From there, we’ll proceed by Tuk Tuk to the flower market at the river. We’ll take a stroll across the market and pay a visit to a nearby Chinese temple.
On it goes by foot along the river and across a bridge to a wonderful old colonial tea house, where we will have our lunch (sandwiches and ice tea).
Subsequently, we’ll pay a visit to some old buildings, nowadays serving as art galleries or boutiques, where you can shop for high quality living accessories and watch paintings of Thai artists.
About 4 p.m., we will transfer you back to the hotel.
